about

I am a resident of South Bend, Indiana. Aside from being the home to Notre Dame University, the city in itself has several environmental and economic problems that are yet to be addressed fully.

EXPERIENCE

Mitigate Homelessness
There is approximately 30-40 homeless people who have created a shelter “camp” under a bridge near the main bus stop in downtown South Bend. It has become a safety concern for pedestrians, and it also has a detrimental effect on the ambiance of the area. Just recently the mayor has ordered them to seek alternative shelter, and has banned the area to the homeless community.
Bringing More Skilled Laborers to the Area
Unemployment is a good problem to have, but it has come to the point where many employers are trying to increase their hiring incentives (by having a sign-on bonus or increasing starting wages) just to compete for skilled labor in the limited market of job seekers. There are hiring signs all over the community for local businesses, and positions are not being filled quick enough. Nothing is being done to solve this problem, as it seems out of the people’s control.
Stop Drug Trafficking in Vacant and Abandoned Homes
One of the physical traits that is obvious in the South Bend area is the number of homes and buildings that are vacant and/or abandoned. As a result, many drug busts have occurred due to the nature of these unoccupied and unkempt buildings. Local police have become more vigilant in an effort to reduce the number of drug trafficking.
